Why is sustainability so important in freight transport?
The following developments make it necessary to increase the use of sustainable modes of transport and to implement sustainable transport concepts in freight transport:
- The transport sector is dependent on the price of oil, as this has a significant influence on transport costs. Due to the increasing scarcity of crude oil, a corresponding price increase in the transport sector is also the result.
- The increasing volume of freight traffic in Europe is pushing the transport infrastructure to its limits. In combination with increasing individual traffic, this bottleneck is particularly evident in road transport: congestion is the result.
Did you know that freight transport is one of the most environmentally harmful areas in terms of CO2 emissions in logistics? Almost one third of CO2 emissions in OECD countries are attributable to transport.
In order to increase the use of sustainable means of transport such as inland waterways or trains in freight transportation, it is also important to increasingly integrate them into future transport concepts and to use them in combination with trucks.
